Cape Zanpa Lighthouse
Location: Yomitan, Okinawa, Japan

My first visit to Zanpa Lighthouse was on a rainy day where the white lighthouse blended in perfectly with the white overcast clouds in the sky so as to almost disappear. It was, what I call, a dud day for shooting.
Imagine my delight when I was reviewing my photos from my helicopter tour around Okinawa and this beauty popped up!
To set the scene a bit, photographing anything while moving at a high rate of speed, sitting backwards, moving in different directions, and being jolted around constantly made thoughtfully composing shots virtually nonexistent.
And, to add a little excitement to that…this was toward the end of the flight and my memory card was filling up!
When I saw the lighthouse in the distance, my goal was to grab the best shot I could. This turned out to be my favorite of the day.
I love the juxtaposition created by the coastline splitting the image in half…the movement of the water on one side and the stillness of land on the other.
In a larger format of this image, you can even see a person standing on the rocks near the water and another on top of the lighthouse, both wearing masks and looking up at the helicopter as if by design.
I’m so thankful for this opportunity of a do-over!
