Mainland Japan
Mainland Japan is made up of 4 islands: Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Visiting the mainland is a much different experience than life on Okinawa. Even though everyone speaks Japanese, the historical and cultural aspects vary dramatically. While Okinawa is a main island, it is fairly remote and not considered “mainland” when referencing Japan.
